Afrikaner folk song stirs up controversy

A Boer war era folk ditty is experiencing a resurgence amongst Afrikaners, who are belting the tune at pubs and rugby matches across South Africa.

But is the song's newfound popularity a harmless expression of cultural identity, or is it symptomatic of a growing right-wing backlash rooted in racism and resentment?

Chris McGreal explores the new phenomenon in The today's issue of the Guardian, and finds several explanations for the desire to latch on to a song about a hundred year old hero.
